Which number Tucker cars had the R1/R2 transmissions? How did the shift mechanism differ on these cars as compared to the 4 speed models?

R1/R2 Transmissions

Postby plancor 792 » Thu Jul 26, 2007 10:29 am

Tucker Serial Number 1026 has the R1 transmission. On this transmission the vehicle must be placed in either forward or reverse , then hold the brake and start the engine. This problem was to be corrected with the R2 or possibly the R3. It is believed that an R2 was in the car destroyed in Memphis. This was Tucker Serial Number 1042.
Tucker 1026 has a shift lever mounted on the steering colum. Only 3 positions. Forward Neutral and Reverse.
The Y-1 selector was quite similar to the Cord selector however the Cord selector was flat on the end and the Y-1 was bullet shaped. Both were mounted on the steering colum. The Cord unit also had a hole in the center of the shift selector and the Y-1 was solid.

I still don't understand what the perceived benefit was in the preselector, other than the fact that you're not actually changing gears, and maybe it's a little less physical activity.
